WACO, Texas (10/19/12) - North Texas tennis wrapped up day
one at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Friday evening with an 8-8 record from the
Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.
Seniors Barbora Vykydalova and Valentina Starkova as well as
sophomore Franziska Sprinkmeyer finished day one 2-1. Several North Texas
players won in the first round but lost in close matches in the second round
including Victoria Parshikova, Agustina Valenzuela and Franziska Sprinkmeyer.
"We
had some good wins today and some missed opportunities too," head coach Sujay
Lama said. "We were not able to close out some close matches."
Vykydalova and Starkova started the day as a doubles team
dropping their first match to Texas Tech's Sanders and Teltumbde 8-4 in the
round of 64.
Vykydalova bounced back defeating Melissa Hadad of Texas
State 6-2; 6-4. She advanced to defeat No. 17 seed Hristina Dishkova of SMU
6-4; 6-4.
Starkova, one of two North Texas players that were seeded,
defeated Carolina Maso of Lamar in straight sets 6-1; 6-3 in the second round
after receiving a first round bye.
"Bara
and Val continue to play exceptional tennis and lead this team by example,"
Lama added. "It's great to see their hard work pay off for them."
Senior
Ilona Serchenko paired with freshman Dané Joubert to advance to the doubles
round of 32 defeating A&M Corpus Christi's Mascal and Nicolae 8-4.
Sprinkmeyer
partnered with Kseniya Bardabush to defeat UTSA duo Hand and Menon 8-1 also
advancing to the doubles round of 32.
Play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional resumes Saturday morning
from the Hurd Tennis Center at 8 a.m. with doubles play.
