SAN DIEGO, Calif. (9/30/12) - Today marked the conclusion of
the SDSU Fall Classic I where the North Texas tennis team won two draw
championship titles as well as three singles consolation championship titles.
The Mean Green went 15-12 in singles play and 8-4 in doubles
play for the weekend. On the final day of competition, the squad went 7-2 in
singles and 3-1 in doubles.
"We
finished strong today and that was important because we have a few weeks before
regionals," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We are learning and improving with
each match."
Sophomore Franziska Sprinkmeyer defeated Dora Somoracz of
SDSU 6-1; 7-6 to capture the singles "white" flight championship Sunday
afternoon. Sprinkmeyer defeated Lisa Roslanova of New Mexico State 6-2; 6-4 to
advance to the finals match. Friday, Sprinkmeyer defeated Leslie Chang of CSUN
6-3; 6-2 in the quarterfinal.
"It
was great to see Franziska come up big in singles this weekend. She is one of
the hardest workers on our team. This performance should give her a lot of
confidence."
Barbora Vykydalova paired with Valentina Starkova defeated
Stephanie Hoffpauir - Cora Brown of San Diego 8-4 to take the doubles "black"
flight championship. The pair defeated Somoracz - Nguyen of SDSU 8-3 in the
semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Vykydalova - Starkova defeated Depanau -
Haciriafoglu of San Diego.
"Bara
and Val played great doubles. They had great energy and chemistry and were deserving
of the flight A title."
Vykydalova was one of three players to win singles
consolation championship title. Vykydalova defeated Marta Stojanovic of San Diego
4-6; 6-2 (10-2) for the sinlges "black" consolation title. Agustine Valenzuela
defeated Tara Panu of Pepperdine 6-1; 6-4 for the singles "white" consolation
title. Emelia Box defeated Lorraine Cheung of CSUN 6-2; 6-0 to win the singles
"grey" consolation title.
Ksenyia Bardabush defeated No. 90 nationally ranked Julia
Wais of SDSU 6-4; 6-4 to take third-place in the singles "red" flight.
North Texas travels to Waco, Texas for the ITA Texas
Regional at the Hurd Tennis Center on October 19-23.
