North Texas To Join Conference USA In 2013

DENTON, Texas -- Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on May 4, 2012, that the University of North Texas has been extended and accepted an invitation for Conference USA membership, effective July 1, 2013.

"This is validation that the progress we have made in our athletic programs in conjunction with our university's academic reputation has made us a suitable fit for the high standards of Conference USA," Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. "Conference USA provides a great partnership with several schools in our geographic proximity and will help all of us create outstanding regional rivalries. It is a tremendous opportunity for North Texas athletics."

North Texas is one of six schools that will join Conference USA. On May 4, five schools accepted invitations: North Texas, the University of Texas-San Antonio, Louisiana Tech University, Florida International University and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. On May 17, Old Dominion University accepted C-USA's invitation. Read the full story here.

C-USA Basketball To Give NT Opportunities

Conference USA has come calling and North Texas is on the move in 2013 to a new league. With so many moving parts and pieces to the puzzle, a lot of different programs will be impacted. Both basketball programs have already had active off seasons, and this just adds more intrigue. The Mean Green starts C-USA play in 2013-14, so what will the impact be for coaches Tony Benford and Mike Petersen? Read the full story here.

New League Brings Three Texas Rivals

A question long discussed among Mean Green fans: does North Texas have a rival? Not a rival for one or two years, existing only in one or two sports. Not an unrequited rivalry with a reluctant geographic foe, but a genuine, long-term, natural rivalry. The very fact that the question is raised suggests the answer. No one ever asks if Texas-Oklahoma or Duke-North Carolina are rivalries because the answer is obvious. It's just as clear here: North Texas does not have a rival.

That void is about to be filled with the Mean Green's entry into Conference USA, an alignment that brings North Texas into a league with three other Texas schools at the Division I level for the first time since the 1950s. Read the full story here.
