DENTON, Texas (2/19/12) - The North Texas softball team
used an eight-run fifth inning to defeat Wichita State, 12-9, and finish the
2012 Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic with a 3-0 record at Lovelace Stadium on
Sunday night.
After getting rained out on Saturday, tournament action
resumed on Sunday with four games. Creighton and North Texas tied for the best
record in the tournament at 3-0, but the Bluejays won the tiebreaker and took
the title with fewer runs against. Wichita State won its first three games
before falling to the Mean Green in the final game of the day.
The Mean Green improves to 4-3 overall, while the
Shockers fall to 4-5. WSU leads the series against NT, 10-4, but the Mean Green
has won the last four meetings.
North Texas trailed three times in the final game versus
Wichita State but a big fifth inning sealed the win for the Mean Green.
Brittany Simmons picked up her third win this season after coming in to relieve
starter Lauren Poole, and Ashley Kirk recorded her first career save.
The Mean Green trailed in the top of the fifth, 6-4. Lisa
Johnson led off the fifth inning with her second career triple, and Brooke
Foster tied the game with a two-run homer. It was her first home run of the
season. Jackie Miller gave North Texas its second lead of the game with a
bases-loaded pinch-hit RBI single. The runs kept coming as North Texas plated
five more to go ahead, 12-6.
Caitlin Grimes went 3-for-4 in the game with three
singles and two RBI. She knocked in two of the Mean Green's first two runs. The
senior knocked in a tournament-leading six RBI in three games. She and Megan
Rupp led North Texas with six hits each in the tournament.
Ashley McCarroll went 3-for-4, and Johnson went 2-for-3
with three runs scored and two RBI. Both her hits were for extra bases.
North Texas returns to action next weekend when it
competes in the Texas Shoot-out in Waco, TX.
