2008-09 Academic Success
North Texas student-athletes continued their academic success in the classroom during the 2008-09 school year.
The women's tennis team earned a perfect 100 percent in the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate in 2008, placing it among the nation's best, and the women's soccer team finished in the top 10 percent on the NCAA's Academic Progress Report during the 2007-08 season. It is the second time in three years that head coach John Hedlund's team has earned the NCAA's top academic distinction by performing in the top 10 percent of all Division I women's soccer programs.
During the past academic year, the soccer squad compiled a combined grade point average of 3.3, with six players earning a perfect 4.0 in at least one semester and a spot on the President's Honor Roll. The team had an additional seven players that were named to the Dean's List with GPAs between 3.50 and 3.99. In all, 24 members of the Mean Green women's soccer team had a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The commitment to women's athletics was also recognized. For the second consecutive year the Mean Green was crowned national champions of the annual Gender Equity Scorecard released by Penn State York.
Former track & field student-athlete Andrew Turner was named the Male Varsity Athlete of the Year at this year's University of North Honors Day.
The swimming and diving team was selected as a top Academic All-American team in NCAA Division I, ranking second in the Sun Belt and tied for 32nd in the nation by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2008-09 school year. The swim team finished second behind women's golf for posting the top GPA at North Texas this past year.
Women's golf student-athletes Jordan Rose and Addison Long were honored by the National Golf Coaches Association by being named to the 2008-09 All-American Scholar Team. It's the second straight year that Rose has been named to the team. The pair was one of 410 student-athletes from Division I, II, and III honored. The Mean Green golf team posted the highest GPA out of all the sports teams at North Texas for the 2008-09 school year.
Basketball student-athlete George Odufuwa was named to the ESPN The Magazine First Team All-District team.
North Texas held the third annual Mean Green Student-Athlete Scholars Banquet this past May. Thirty-one student-athletes, not including freshman, were invited to attend.
Each of the student-athletes fell into one of three categories based on their current grade point average- Platinum, Gold and Silver. Athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average for their team were given a Green Eagle Award.
The Mean Green swimming team led the way with eight representatives, including Kelly Gordon, who posted a 4.0 GPA.
Tennis player Rachel Wilhelm received the Gayle and Virgil Strange Award, which honors the senior with the highest grade point average among all teams.
