Ortiz Shines At The Byron Nelson Junior Championship

DENTON, Texas (7/1/09) – North Texas men’s golf signee Carlos Ortiz has given the Mean Green an early peek at his potential as he finished in second place at the Byron Nelson Junior Championship. Ortiz fired a three-round score of 1-over par 214 in the field of 78 of the top junior golfers from Texas and Mexico.  

“Carlos had a great tournament against a lot of really good competition. We are really looking forward to getting him here in the fall and seeing him doing great things for North Texas” said coach Brad Stracke.

Ortiz had 13 birdies for the tournament, the second most in the field and six birdies in his second round of 1-under par 70. Ortiz carded 42 pars or birdies in his 54 holes during the tournament. He is the No. 1 ranked player in MJGA flight 16-18 and the No. 2 player in the Mexican Federation of Golf.

Ortiz has moved up the rankings according to Junior Golf Scoreboard from No. 220 in the world to No. 178.

Conducted by the Legends Junior Tour, the HP Byron Nelson Junior Championship features 78 boys, ages 12-18, from Texas and Mexico. The tournament was first held in 2000 and has grown into one of the top junior tournaments in Texas.
