COMPLETE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP INFO FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (6/10/09) – The pursuit of
reaching the finals at the NCAA Championship came to an end for both the North
Texas men’s 4X100 relay team and pole vaulter Jordan Wehr Wednesday evening at
the 2009 NCAA Championship. “It’s disappointing in the since that I really thought we
could make the finals and the kids competed hard and performed at their best
and still missed out,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. Wehr was one attempt away from competing in the finals,
finishing in a tie for 15th with a final jump of 17-02.75. The
junior from Austin, Texas broke the school record last month at the SBC
Championship with a mark of 17-06.50. The men’s 4X100 relay team came up just short of
qualifying for the finals, finishing third in their respective heat and 11th
overall with a season-best time of 39.59. The foursome of Keyth Talley, Ryan
Varner, Byron Washington and C.J. Fowler finished nine-hundredths of a second
off the school-record set by the 1999 relay team. “This has to be the first time in my coaching career
where teams had to run as low as times as they did just to get into the finals,”
Watkins said. “There were four teams alone that ran under 39 seconds and that’s
just unheard of.” Auburn was the eighth and final relay team to qualify for
the finals with a finish of 39.31. This season marked the second in a row that North Texas
had at least two representatives at the NCAA Championships. |
