COLLEGE STATION, Texas (1/16/10) – Sophomore sprinter Keyth Talley picked up right where he left off the 2009 season by breaking the indoor track school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.69 Saturday afternoon at the Texas A&M Invitational. Talley, who finished second in the 60-meter dash behind Texas A&M’s Gerald Phiri (6.63), also set North Texas’ first NCAA provisional time of the young season. He advanced to the finals after winning his heat with a then school-record time of 6.73, only to break it again hours later. “It was good to see Keyth get off to a good start,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins. “He’s already started off faster than he did in the indoor season last year.” For the rest of the Mean Green Saturday was an opportunity to get their feet wet against some of the top teams in the nation. However, each athlete was limited to just one competition per person as they prepare for the rest of the season. Junior hurdler Alysha Adams advanced to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and finished eighth with a time of 8.76. Also on the women’s side, newcomers Missy Barnes and Brittany Blaylock advanced to the 60-meter dash and placed ninth (7.610) and 10th (7.614) respectively. In the field events, senior Ashley Austin placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18-09.00. North Texas will pick up the pace next weekend when they travel to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Invitational, which will run Friday and Saturday. |
