DENTON, Texas (1/23/10) - Mean Green Swimming and Diving celebrated senior day by doing something they have never done before Saturday afternoon at the Pohl Recreation Center.
North Texas (9-4) expanded on their record setting season by downing Rice 152-110, marking the first win in program history over the Owls. The leadership of the seniors was apparent throughout the meet, as the seniors were apart of five of the first nine event victories. "I can't express how happy I am for our seniors to finish their home careers with a win like this one today," head coach Joe Dykstra said. "These nine seniors have been such an integral part of elevating this program to where we are today. For them to seize control of this meet today and lead the team to our first ever win over Rice is really a terrific way for them to remember their time competing here on campus. I am so very proud of them and the entire squad." Senior Alicia Hale led the way for the Mean Green, registering two more individual victories during the dual, pushing her career total to 49 first place finishes. Hale won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.34 before going on to take to 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 52.60 seconds. Nicole Leslie, also a senior, took home first in the 50-yard freestyle again, posting her second straight time under 24 seconds at 23.98. Senior Emily Floyd, the school record holder in every distance event, showed why she holds the records, registering first place in the 1000-yard freestyle by almost six seconds with a time of 10:21.43. The other five swimmers and one diver making their final home appearances of their career included Emily Cardone-Dennis, Kristen Hempleman, Laura Littleton, Kim Nelson-Wulff, Christine O'Connell and Elizabeth Weiss. North Texas will be back in action Feb. 6, when they head to No. 6 Texas A&M for their final dual meet of the season. |
