DENTON, Texas (10/9/09) - On a festive chilly night that
belonged to seniors Kendall Juett, Kelli Lunsford and Lauren Shockey, the Mean
Green made sure to send them out in style.
North Texas sophomore forward Kelsey Perlman scored two
goals and freshman midfielder Ellen Scarfone added another as the Mean Green
soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to five games with a 3-0 win over the
South Alabama Jaguars Friday evening.
"This win was for
the seniors tonight," Hedlund said. "They have done so much for the program,
not just on the field but off the field as well. It was important everyone did
their job to make this a special night for Kendall, Kelli and Shockey."
As for the game itself the Mean Green jumped on the
Jaguars early and never looked back. Perlman scored her third goal of the
season only 5:37 into the contest when she directed a high bouncing ball up and
over the head of goalkeeper Katie Berry to give North Texas a 1-0 lead.
Then out of halftime defender Hannah Crawford found
Scarfone in front of the box, and after a bit of a collision with Berry, Scarfone
had an easy chip shot for her third goal of the season.
Perlman would add her fourth goal of the season and
second of the game in the 80th minute when she showed off her speed
even in the mud to fire a shot that ricocheted off the right post and back
across and in to put North Texas up by the final score of 3-0.
"We talked before the game how we may never have a team
like this again with the combination of seniors and young players," Perlman
said. "Those seniors have carried us all season and throughout their careers.
They've helped me see what I'm playing for now."
Before the game all three seniors were honored with
plaques and were recognized for their contributions throughout their careers at
North Texas. The players then returned the favor as the team Hedlund a commemorative game ball from his 200th
career victory earlier in the season that was signed by the team.
"It was great to
get a win tonight and get off to a good start for the weekend," Juett said. "It
was a different type of feeling being honored before the game. It's amazing how
fast four years fly by. We tried to enjoy it though and shared some laughs."
For North Texas it was their sixth shutout of the season
and fourth win out of their last five games. They will get back to the field
Sunday afternoon when they host Troy at 1 p.m. in the home finale.
