MIAMI, Florida (10/04/09) - After trailing 2-0 with only
11 minutes remaining in regulation, the Mean Green soccer team rallied to play the
FIU Golden Panthers to a 2-2 draw in double overtime Sunday afternoon.
The Mean Green (7-4-1, 3-0-1) scored the game-tying goal
in the 82nd minute when Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year
Kendall Juett came up clutch with her second goal of the season and the 28th
of her career. Juett's goal followed Rachel Turpin's first career goal, which occurred
in the 79th minute.
"We knew going in FIU was going to be a challenge
especially after they beat Denver on Friday," North Texas head coach John
Hedlund said. "I'm proud of my girls, they never gave up and fought back from
being down and fighting the humidity and picked up a nice result on the road. The
bottom line is we didn't lose this weekend and are still undefeated in
conference. Now we set our sights on two games at home next weekend."
North Texas and FIU both had 12 shots and four corner
kicks. Junior goalkeeper Mandy Hall collected five saves in 110 minutes of
play.
The Golden Panthers (4-5-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in
the 17th minute on a header from Katrina Rose off a corner kick by
Casey Thames. FIU's other goal came in the 73rd minute on a shot by
April Perry.
The Mean Green will return to Denton next weekend for
their final home games of the season. North Texas will host South Alabama on Friday
at 7 p.m., followed by a match against Troy on Sunday at 1 p.m.
