DENTON, Tex. - The North Texas women's basketball team gets an early challenge in the young season as they face the 10th ranked team in the land, the Texas Longhorns tonight at the Erwin Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m as the Mean Green are in search of their first win of the season. The game can be heard live on www.kntu.com and tape delayed on 88.1 FM KNTU following the high school football coverage. North Texas has not fared well against Texas as the Longhorns own a perfect 9-0 mark against the Mean Green. The series first started in 1978, the second year of basketball for North Texas. The Mean Green is 0-7 against Texas in Austin with the closest encounter coming in 2005, the last time North Texas played Texas. That was a 69-49 win for the Longhorns. North Texas has never beaten a Top 25 team in school history. Texas will be the 10th Top 25 team that the Mean Green has faced since the 2003-04 season. The biggest near miss of an upset for North Texas over a Top 25 team came in 1999 when the Mean Green hosted No. 2 Purdue and fell short 79-68. Freshman Jasmine Godbolt burst onto the scene for North Texas against George Washington with 15 points and nine rebounds, leaving her one shy of a double-double. Godbolt was just one rebound away from recording the earliest double-double in school history for a true freshman. Senior Brittney James notched another 20-point game against George Washington. That makes six 20-point games for her career and the third game of 20-points or more for James her last 27 games played. She buried three 3-pointers against GW and vaulted to fifth all-time in school history. With just three more 3-pointers, James will pass current assistant coach Jalie Johnson (Mitchell) and move into fourth place. She currently has 85 3-pointers for her career. |
