Shipp followed up a miss by Danni Jackson for the game-winning basket with
seconds left on the clock, giving the Colonials an 84-82 victory against the
North Texas women's basketball team on Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green falls to 0-2 this season and 22-12 in
overall home openers. GW wins its first game of the season and takes a 1-0 lead
in the series against the Mean Green.
North Texas led for most of the game and held a
seven-point lead, 75-68, with 4:41 left in the game. GW scored 10 of the next
12 points to take its first lead, 78-77, since the opening minute of the second
half.
The Mean Green would tie the game three times in the last
1:37 of the game, but the Colonials came back one final time with three seconds
remaining. Shipp followed up her teammate's miss with a short jumper, and the
Mean Green's last second attempt fell short.
Brittney James led all scorers with 20 points. Niq'ky
Hughes followed with a season-best 19 points, and Jasmine Godbolt also posted a
personal best with 15 points. Torrian Timms tied a career high with 10 points.
North Texas jumped out early, scoring the first basket
and never looking back. A jumper by James gave the Mean Green an 11-point lead,
22-11, with 11:27 to play in the first half. With NT holding a 31-22 lead, GW
scored the next eight points to cut the lead to one, 31-30, with 2:15 left in
the first period. Megan Nipe hit the final five points of the half to again cut
the NT lead to one, 36-35.
GW took a brief lead to start the second half, but North
Texas took command and led throughout the second period. The Mean Green led by
as many as 11 points, twice, before the Colonials began to peck away at the
lead with four minutes to go.
The Mean Green shot 46.2 percent from the field, and made
16-for-28 shots from the free-throw line.
North Texas returns to action on Friday, Nov. 20 when it
faces Texas on the road.
