MIAMI (2/6/10) - Brittney James and the North Texas women's basketball team had the touch from 3-point, but a resilient Florida International squad held off NT, 72-55, at U.S. Century Bank Arena on Saturday.
James led the Mean Green (6-18, 3-10 Sun Belt) with 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, but the Golden Panthers (11-13, 6-6 Sun Belt) found the win column with 26 points from Elisa Carey.
As a team, North Texas nailed five 3-pointers on 14 tries, but FIU had the answer for every NT run.
A Niq'ky Hughes layup whittled FIU's lead from seven points to two with 15-minutes remaining, but that was as close as NT would come as the Golden Panthers kept the Mean Green at arm's length for the rest of the afternoon.
Ravven Brown posted 11 points for NT, and Jasmine Godbolt, who set the NT freshman record for double-doubles in a season earlier this year, also found double figures with 10 points. Brown filled up the stat sheet with four rebounds, four assists and three steals to just one turnover.
Trailing 16-9 with 11 minutes left in the first, Brown and Hughes got loose for a pair of fast-break layups that awakened the Mean Green and prompted an FIU timeout.
North Texas began digging itself out of some early turnover trouble by getting to the free throw line. The Mean Green had eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, but made nine trips to the stripe in the first half, including an "and-1" opportunity for Hughes.
Brittney James' strike from deep made it a 1-point ball game with 30 seconds left in the half, but a Golden Panther 3-point play sent the Mean Green into the break down 32-28.
North Texas returns to action at New Orleans on Feb. 10. Tip time from Lakefront Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
