DENTON, Texas
(11/7/09) - The ULM defense stifled the Mean Green as the North Texas
football team fell to the Warhawks, 33-6, on Saturday afternoon at Fouts Field.
The Mean Green falls to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the
conference, while the Warhawks improve to 5-4 and 4-1 in the Sun Belt. ULM
extends its series lead against NT to 14-12.
After tying a school record with 68 points scored last
game, the Mean Green was held to six points against ULM. Jeremy Knott scored
all the Mean Green's points with two field goals from 30 and 36 yards.
Lance Dunbar carried for 40 yards, putting him at 1,001
for the year. The sophomore is just the ninth player in North Texas history to
rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Dunbar was held to 14 rushing yards in
the first half.
North Texas' offensive output of 268 yards is the second
fewest of the season. On the other side, ULM posted 454 total yards of offense.
LaGregory Sapp was the offensive leader with seven passes for 187 yards,
including two touchdown receptions.
ULM scored on its opening possession and never looked
back the rest of the game. Frank Goodin rushed in from the one-yard line for
the opening touchdown at 9:29 in the first quarter and then capped the scoring
with a 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth. He finished with 102 yards.
Sapp caught his first touchdown pass near the end of the first
half with a 12-yard grab to put ULM ahead, 16-3. At the start of the third
quarter, Sapp had an eight-yard reception at the corner of the end zone to make
it 23-3. He helped set up the score with a 52-yard catch on the first play of
the drive. The wide receiver also had a 46-yard catch at the start of the game.
Knott posted the Mean Green's only points of the half
with a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter. Behind two touchdowns and a
field goal, the Warhawks jumped out to a 16-3 halftime lead.
Luther Ambrose helped set up ULM's fourth score with a
62-yard kick-off return. Radi Jabour connected on a 43-yard field goal to keep
the Warhawks ahead, 26-6.
Defensively, James Truxillo led ULM with nine total
tackles. Greg James had three interceptions for the Warhawks. Craig Robertson
led the Mean Green with 11 tackles.
Riley Dodge completed 21 of 37 passes for 189 yards,
while ULM's Trey Revell passed for 282 yards and went 14-for-22 in the air.
Darius Carey led the Mean Green receiving corp with nine
catches for 72 yards.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 14 at FIU
in Miami, Fla. At 6 p.m.
