AUSTIN, Texas (9/23/12) - Newcomer Dane Joubert teamed up with senior Ilona Serchenko to go 4-0 and to capture the "White" doubles flight championship at the Longhorn Invitational at Texas's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Mean Green had multiple players advance to their respective flight semifinals as well as flight finals.
"Overall, we had an outstanding tournament. The caliber of competition was very high this weekend and it was exciting to see us do so well in just our first tournament," Coach Sujay Lama said. "We have a great group of ladies eager to work hard and improve so that we can take that next step. They definitely made a statement this weekend"
Joubert and Serchenko started the weekend off by defeating partners Victoria Parshikova of North Texas and Annat Ravinovich of Texas 9-7 in the round of 16. The duo had no trouble defeating the No. 2 seeds, Leah Fried and Jane Stewart of Rice, with an 8-1 victory in the flight quarterfinals.
Saturday morning in the semifinals match, the pair went on to beat the No. 3 seeds, Emma Helisten and Jacqui Katz of Tulane, 8-6.
Sunday in the championship match, Joubert and Serchenko faced Heidi Stewart and Holly Verner of SMU, the team that knocked off No. 1 seeds Elena Kordolaimi and Dionne Sanders of Houston. The Mean Green won the match 8-3 to win the flight championship.
Joubert was just as dominant in singles competition. In her first collegiate tournament she won the "White" doubles flight and made it to the finals of the "Fuchsia" singles flight.
"For a freshmen to be in the finals of singles and win a doubles championship is a tremendous feat. To do it in her first collegiate event was quite impressive." Coach Lama said. "Dane has such a great attitude both on and off the court and it was fun to see her compete."
Joubert started singles play by knocking off the No. 2 seed, Steffi Rath of Denver, in three sets 6-7; 6-2; 6-1 on Friday afternoon in the round of 16.
Saturday morning in the quarterfinals, Joubert defeated Vivian Tsui of West Virginia 7-5; 6-1. Later that afternoon in the semifinals, Joubert was tested by No. 4 seeded Holly Verner of SMU winning in three sets, 5-7; 6-3; 6-4.

Bardabush advanced to the semifinals to play Elizabeth Begley of Texas. Begley defeated Bardabush in three sets, 3-7; 7-6; 6-2.
"Keseniya had an impressive tournament both in singles and doubles. Her win against the top seed and the 34th ranked player in the country was a break through victory and should propel her to great things this year."
Vykydalova began the tournament handing Charlotte Phillips of Houston a 6-1; 6-1 loss in Friday's round of 16.
