2007-08 Academic Achievements North Texas student-athletes continued their academic success in the classroom during the 2007-08 schoool year. Former football student-athlete Raifu Durodoye was named the Male Varsity Athlete of the Year at this year’s University of North Honors Day. Swimming & Diving student-athlete Christina Hammervold was the Female Varsity Athlete of the Year honoree. The swimming and diving team was honored as a top academic team in NCAA Division I by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The swim team finished second behind tennis for posting the top GPA at North Texas this past year. Following
her senior season, shortstop Katya Muller received numerous awards for
her achievements on and off the field. In addition to being named
first-team all-conference, Muller was also selected as one of 30
candidates for the 2008 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Thirty of the
nation’s best softball college players who also excel in the classroom
and make an impact in their respective communities were listed as
nominees.Muller was also named to the ESPN The Magazine First Team All-District team. North Texas held the second annual Mean Green Student-Athlete Scholars Banquet this past May. Thirty-five student-athletes, not including freshman, were invited to attend. Each of the student-athletes fell into one of three categories based on their current grade point average- Platinum, Gold and Silver. Athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average for their team were given a Green Eagle Award. Pitcher Kristina Fowler received the Gayle and Virgil Strange Award, which honors the senior with the highest overall grade point average among all teams. Fowler graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. |
