DENTON, Texas – At Monday night’s Mean Green Basketball Banquet standout forward Tony Mitchell made the announcement that North Texas fans have been waiting for – the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year will return for his sophomore season.

A finalist for the Lou Henson Award, given annually to the nation’s top mid-major player, Mitchell was the only freshman in the nation to average a double-double last year at 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. In SBC play he led the league in scoring, rebounding, 3-point field goal percentage and blocks, and finished second in field goal percentage.

The Dallas native set the program’s single season blocks record at 70 blocks in just 23 games, and is the first player in college basketball since Kansas State’s Michael Beasley to record multiple 30-point/15-rebound performances.

At Monday’s banquet, Mitchell brought home the team’s Offensive Player of the Year, as well as the Field Goal Percentage and Rebounding awards.

Alzee Williams earned the North Texas Defensive Player of the Year, and the squad’s Free Throw Award. Seniors Kedrick Hogans, Alonzo Edwards and Tyler Hall were honored for their contributions.

On the women’s side Tamara Torru was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Jasmine Godbolt was named Offensive MVP, and Desiree Nelson was named Defensive MVP. Laura McCoy took home the Eagle Award.

The women's team also honored its four seniors - Torru, Alyssa Hankins, Brittney Hudson and Kasondra Foreman.
