FORT WORTH, Texas - The Mean Green swimming and diving team
was unable to close out TCU Wednesday night at the Campus Recreation Center
despite some excellent times from sophomores Mona Groteguth and Krista Rossum. The
final score was 161- 139 in favor the of the Horned Frogs.
"That was a tough loss tonight against a very good TCU team," head coach Joe Dykstra said. "My hat is off to them for performing very well. We've had a lot of success against them the past few years and tonight they exacted some measure of revenge against us. Their sprinters and flyers were just too much for us to handle. They look to be in a good position to get 2nd in the Big XII next month."
North Texas had beaten the Horned Frogs in three of the past
four meetings until Wednesday night including a battle last season on senior
night that saw the Mean Green come away victorious.
"We did have some really good performances though this evening," coach Dykstra continued. "Krista Rossum, Mona Groteguth, and Kimmy Phillips continue to put up really impresive times week in and week out and are set up for some major success at the end of the season. Our divers really did a great job tonight as well. Catherine Johnson surpassed the NCAA Zone qulaifying score on both boards tonight and Rebecca Taylor also beat the score on the 3-meter."
Groteguth could not be slowed in the lane as she took first
in all three of her individual events. She posted a 57.08 time in the 100 yard
back as well as 2:02.95 in the 200 yard back. She also prevailed over her
competition in the 100 yard butterfly, where she notched a time of 57.70.
Fellow sophomore Krista Rossum was equally effective in her
return to Fort Worth after a dominant performance a year ago. She placed first
in the 100 breast (1:03.89), the 200 breast (2:19.00) and the 400 yard IM
(4:22.93).
The Mean Green also found success through its relay squads. The
NT 200 yard medley "A" team consisting of Groteguth, Rossum, senior Bryn Lewis
and freshman Michelle Balcaen placed second with a time of 1:46.94. Balcaen led
the charge with a 23.96 split.
North Texas' 200 yard freestyle "A" team also came in second
place with a time of 1:38.09.
Other notable performances included sophomore Kimmy Phillip's
time in the marathon that is the 1000 yard freestyle. She edged out TCU's Sara
Brzozowski with her first mark of 10:05.96.
Junior Catherine Johnson was reliable as always on the board
with a first place score on the one-meter dive. She scored a 268.05, which was
a whole 24 points more than the second place diver. The multiple SBC diver of
the week also placed second in the three-meter (299.88).
"Our challenge going forward to Friday's meet against A&M and into the conference championships is to get the rest of our team to understand how important they are to our team success and to know that they are better than how they've performed at some of these tough dual meets this season," coach Dykstra concluded.
The Mean Green does not get a break as it returns to the
home pool on Friday, February 1, for senior night against the Aggies of Texas
A&M.
