WACO, Texas (10/22/12) - North Texas tennis finished day
three of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Sunday evening where all Mean Green tennis players playing in main draw matches fell to their seeded opponents at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor
University.
No. 17 seed Valentina Starkova lost her only singles match
of the day to No. 2 seed and No. 15 ranked nationally Natalie Beazant of Rice
in a two and a half long battle., falling 6-1;6-7(2); 3-6.
"Val played
very well and put up a great fight against one of the top players in the
country," head coach Sujay Lama said. "She was just a few points away from
winning the match. I am extremely proud of her and happy to see her elevate her
game in her senior year."
Starkova moved
on from the loss teaming up with Barbora Vykydalova defeating Liselot Koesnen
and Charlotte Phillips of Houston 8-2 before defeating Sandra Battye and
Imke Jagau of A&M Corpus Christi 8-1 in the consolation draw. The duo face Texas
State's Rachel Baldree and Berenice Van Bergh at 9 a.m. Monday.
"And Bara and
Val played very well to move on in doubles consolation play," Lama said.
Dané Joubert and Ilona Serchenko lost a close match to No.
8 seed Elizabeth Begley and Lina Padegimate of Texas 9-7 in a match that could
have gone either way.
"Dane and
Ilona competed their hearts out in doubles but came sort by just a little,"
Lama said. "They have great chemistry and could be a formidable pair for the
dual matches down the road."
No. 12 seed
Kseniya Bardabush easily defeated Marina Trierweiler of UTEP 6-3; 6-1 to
advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation draws where she will face Sofya
Malysheva of Texas Tech at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
"Kseniya showed great
resiliency by winning one more match today to advance," Lama added.
Play at
the USTA/ITA Texas Regional continues Monday morning from Hurd Tennis Center at
9 a.m. with doubles action.
