Denton, Texas (08/14/2012) - Mean Green tennis head coach Sujay Lama announced his team's 2012-13 schedule from the Waranch Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
"The goal each year is to continue improving and reaching new heights," said Lama. "Our schedule this year gives us the opportunity to be challenged so that we can be best prepared for post-season play. We have an outstanding home schedule. It will be great for our fans. "
North Texas, coming off the program's second Sun Belt Conference Championship in three years, will compete in five tournaments before kicking off dual match play.
The dual match schedule features nine teams that finished last season ranked, including six in the top-50 and three in the top-25.
Tournament play starts September 21-23 in Austin, Texas, with the Longhorn Invitational. The Mean Green will head to San Diego, Calif., for the Aztec Invitational (September 28-30) followed by the Intercollegate Tennis Association Texas Regional (October 19-23) in Waco, Texas.
After the Cougar Invitational (November 2-3), the Mean Green wraps up tournament play January 19-21 at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational.
The spring season will open with the ITA Kick-Off January 26-27 in College Station. The Mean Green is set to play Texas A&M in the first round and will face Minnesota or Arizona in the second round. All three teams finished the 2011-12 season ranked in the top 40.
The Mean Green will play host to two top-50 teams when No. 27 Arizona (February 23) and No. 35 TCU (February 27) come to Denton.
The month of March will be particularly tough as five of the nine matches will be against ranked opponents, including dates at No. 20 Georgia Tech (March 1), vs. No. 23 Tulsa (March 8), vs. No. 62 Wichita State, vs. No. 75 Columbia (March 23) and No. 69 Georgia State (March 30) at Louisville, Ky.
The Mean Green closes out the regular season by hosting UTA (April 2), Middle Tennessee (April 12) and Troy (April 14) before heading to Lafayette for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament April 18-21.
