DENTON, Texas - North Texas tennis heads to South Florida this week for a rematch of last year's Sun Belt Conference Championship against No. 58 FIU on Tuesday afternoon and a match against South Alabama on Thursday morning.
The Mean Green (3-8) defeated the then 49th ranked Golden Panthers (7-5) in a four hour thriller by a score of 4-3 to capture the programs first conference championship in April 2010.
"We have had some great practices since our match versus Xavier," said head coach Sujay Lama. "I like the focus we have right now. We are looking forward to playing two conference teams this week. It's important to build on the momentum from our last match."
North Texas is coming off a dominant 7-0 victory of the Musketeers of Xavier on Wednesday afternoon and is looking to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this season on Tuesday.
Junior Irina Paraschiv currently leads to Mean Green, having won her last six singles matches, which dates back to Feb. 13 and includes wins in the top slot against the No. 1 players from No. 30 Tulsa and No. 64 Texas Tech.
Paraschivs teams up with Vykydalova to lead the way on the doubles side on the court where the duo has won four of its last six matches.
FIU is currently on a six match winning streak since dropping a match the Miami 7-0 Feb. 11.
The Golden Panthers have defeated three SBC schools (Arkansas State, ULL and Troy) in that span, while dropping a total of two six points.
South Alabama is currently sitting at 1-3 on the year with its lone victory coming against Austin Peay last Friday.
The Mean Green match against FIU will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon while the match against the Jaguars of South Alabama is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday.
