Tiger Woods has his red, the North Texas women's golf team has its pink. In case you missed it, the women won their fourth tournament of the year down in Florida this weekend. That's by far a school record.
Prior to this season, North Texas had won a grand total of five tournaments in seven years. None of those SBC titles either.
The run all started back in September at the Worldlink North Texas Fall Classic. Trailing by a stroke heading into the final round, the girls wanted to wear their pink shirts instead of the final day green's.
Well, head coach Jeff Mitchell agreed. However afterwards he confided in me that it would have been difficult to have the girls wear the green's because there was a snafu with the shirts and he wasn't sure if he could get them in time or not.
Call it the best uniform snafu in program history. The Mean Green went on to blow out the field and win that tournament in pink.
Two weeks later in Portland, it was another North Texas victory. And it was another final round in the pink.
The superstition was born and the girls were wearing pink every final round. North Texas went onto win the Pat Bradley FIU Invitational to close out the fall season, yet again in the pink shirts. To begin the spring season, the Mean Green finished in second, third, and fourth place until the Cincy tournament and the fourth win of the season.
Alas traditionalist, North Texas wasn't in the pink down in Florida. They wore final round green shirts and captured the title anyways. However they didn't entirely shelve the pink shirts, they wore those in the practice round before the tournament.
Whatever the case may be, green or pink, North Texas has been putting up red numbers in golf terms and winning tournaments at the best clip in school history.
The starting five of Chandra Alexander, Addison Long, Jacey Chun, Chaslyn Chrismer, and Kelsey Kipp are clicking. Chrismer, a true freshman, had the second lowest round (67) in school history earlier this spring.
Kipp has the lowest stroke average in the Sun Belt Conference. Alexander has the third lowest in the league. Long has three top-10 finishes this season and newcomer Chun has three top-10 finishes in her first four starts of the spring.
This is the best team in school history and the month of April can cement their legacy forever. North Texas women's golf has never won a conference title, ever.
If they can do that you can tickle me pink.
