Softball Stages Comeback To Win Nightcap

DENTON, Texas (3/16/13) - The North Texas softball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to come from behind to defeat Troy, 8-6, on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Trojans came back to win the first game of the doubleheader, 10-8.

The Mean Green improves to 13-12 and 2-2 in the conference, while the Trojans fall to 12-17, and 2-2 in the Sun Belt. The Trojans have lost seven of their last eight games.

Both teams staged huge comebacks to split the doubleheader. North Texas jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening game before Troy began pecking away with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Down 8-4, the Trojans scored six runs in the seventh to steal the win from the Mean Green.

The Trojans jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap. Karly Williams scored a run for the Mean Green in the fourth with an in-the-park home run. It was the freshman's second home run of her career. Freshman Taylor Schoblocher capped a seven-run sixth inning for the Mean Green with a three-run pinch-hit home run to take the win from Troy.

Lauren Poole (1-4) took the loss in the first game after relieving Brittany Simmons in the seventh. The junior gave up three runs off two hits and left without getting a batter out. She came back in the second game to pick up her first win of the season. She relieved starter Tori Bice and pitched four scoreless innings. She allowed four hits and struck out a career-high six batters.

Brooke Foster posted a three-run homer in the second inning of the first inning to help put North Texas ahead, 5-0. The junior went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the first game and 3-for-4 in the second.

Jordan Terry went 3-for-4 in the opening loss. She knocked in the team's first run of the game with an RBI double. The sophomore led off the fifth inning with her second double of the game. Also in the fifth, Williams knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Bryana Wade gave North Texas an 8-3 lead with a two-RBI double.

North Texas held an 8-4 lead with one out in the seventh when Troy used three walks, a wild pitch, two doubles and two singles to score six runs. Chandler Griffin won the game with a three-RBI double.

Troy jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap with five doubles and two singles in the first two innings. North Texas left six runners stranded on base in those two innings.

Williams scored the team's first run with a long ball that bounced off the top of the centerfield fence. She was able to circle all the bases and beat the throw home. The freshman also started the Mean Green's sixth-inning rally with a one-out single.

Madison Tierney joined Williams on base with a bunt single. Both runners scored on a Foster single and a Trojan fielding error. Terry and Dani Hoff posted back-to-back RBI singles, and Schoblocher won the game with her three-run homer. She hit the first pitch she saw to left field.

North Texas outhit the Trojans, 11-10, in the nightcap. The Mean Green left eight runners stranded on base.
