Mean Green Tied For Ninth Place After Day One |

STATESBORO, Ga. - Playing in the prestigious 34th annual Schenkel Invitational for the first time ever, the No. 25 North Texas men's golf team in locked in a tie for ninth place after an opening round of 296. The tournament features three teams in the top-10, five top-25 teams, and seven teams ranked in the top-50 in the country. Jason Roets and Carlos Ortiz lead the Mean Green are they both shot a 1-over par 73 and are tied for 22nd place. Roets carried over his hot play from the Argent Classic to the opening round, but it didn't start that way. Roets began the day with a triple bogey on the 10th hole and was 5-over with four holes left in his round. Roets finished strong with four straight birdies, on holes 6, 7, 8, and 9 to finish out the front nine at 3-under par and post a 1-over par. Ortiz was steady after a similar rugged start to the day like Roets. Ortiz was 3-over par after six holes, but played the last 12 holes at 2-under par. Rodolfo Cazaubon and Gonzalo Rubio are both tied for 45th after shooting 3-over par 75. Cazaubon was 1-under after two holes, but was 5-over on the next 12 holes. He had three birdies on the day. Rubio was 3-over par after his first nine holes on the round, but played the final nine holes at even-par. Curtis Donahoe posted a 4-over par 76. He is tied for 55th place. No. 6 Texas is atop the leaderboard after 18 holes. They hold a two stroke lead over No. 4 Alabama after the first round. The Schenkel is one of the most unique tournaments in all of collegiate golf. It features all three rounds of golf played in front of large galleries as the tournament if open to the public is normally a large draw with the top teams in the nation features.
