WBB: North Texas vs. Arkansas State

DENTON, Texas (2/27/13) - Alexis Hyder notched her ninth double-double of the season to lead the North Texas women's basketball team to a 53-51 win against Arkansas State on Wednesday night at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green (11-18, 10-10) snaps a five-game losing streak at home and wins 10 conference games for the first time since the 2001-02 team did with 12 wins. Arkansas State, who was tied for first in the West Division, falls to 15-13 and 12-7. North Texas sweeps the conference series with the Red Wolves.

Hyder tied the single-season freshman record with her nine double-doubles. She recorded game highs with 20 points and 18 rebounds. The 18 rebounds is a career high. As a team, North Texas outrebounded the Red Wolves, 38-34.

Hyder was key down the stretch. She scored nine of the Mean Green's final 10 points of the game. The freshman put in back-to-back layups amid traffic, tying the game for North Texas and then putting the home team ahead, 47-45, at 6:19.

After ASU's Hanna Qedan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, 48-48, at 3:42, Hyder put the Mean Green ahead for good with two more points in the paint. With a free throw and another basket, Hyder gave North Texas its largest lead, 53-48, since the midway point of the first half. Despite a final three by ASU, North Texas held one for the win with Hyder pulling down a key rebound.

Three-pointers were important for both teams. Qedan led the Red Wolves with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. She led ASU on a run in the first half, starting and capping an 18-5 spread with 3-pointers.

North Texas hit three 3-pointers midway through the second half that helped cut the ASU lead. Laura McCoy hit a 3-pointer at 14:42 that brought the Mean Green within one point, 37-36. Desiree Nelson gave North Texas its first lead of the second half, 40-37, with her one 3-pointer of the game, and then Sara Stanley hit her third 3-pointer of the season to tie the game, 43-43 at 9:28.

Turnovers also played a role in the game. North Texas forced 17 turnovers and scored 14 points off those miscues. The Mean Green stole the ball 10 times from the Red Wolves, including four steals by BreAnna Dawkins. Laura McCoy sealed the win by stealing the ball from the Red Wolves on their final possession.

North Texas jumped out to a 15-7 lead, hitting six of its first 12 shots. Arkansas State came out firing 3-pointers, but made only one of its first five attempts.

Qedan started a 10-0 run by the Red Wolves, hitting the team's second 3-pointer of the night. A three-point play by Quinishia McDowell gave ASU a 10-point lead, 17-16, at 6:24. Another 3-point put ASU ahead, 20-17. Qedan hit another 3-pointer at 2:02 capping an 18-5 run.
