DALLAS – North Texas women’s basketball (0-2) took on SMU (3-0) in the historical Moody Coliseum tonight. In an arena where North Texas has not won since 1989, the Mean Green came up just short, 67-63. Coming off of two straight wins to start the season, the Ponies were riding high. The Mean Green proved to be a worthy foe under the coliseum lights as BreAnna Dawkins led the way for North Texas with 15 points in a thriller. The Mean Green began the first half with a 9-2 lead behind a burst of shots from three different players. SMU quickly countered with a 12-0 run holding the Mean Green to zero points through a seven minute stretch. The two units exchanged blows and runs for the remainder of the first half, a period in which seven different players for the Mean Green scored. North Texas was severely outshot at the charity stripe in the first half 15 attempts to a mere six. The lead changed four different times, and the Mean Green led by as many as seven during the first portion of the half. The second half began with more back and forth play. The whistles were heavily in favor of SMU as halfway through the second half, the Mustangs held a nine to 20 advantage in the foul department. Following a SMU shot clock buzzer-beater, North Texas countered at the 7:35 mark with a Laura McCoy deep trey, the 74th of her career. The Mean Green made a defensive stop out of the ensuing timeout then followed it up with a screen that freed up Sara Stanley for an open look 3-pointer that she drained. SMU retaliated with a barrage of steal and scores burying North Texas into a hole that the Mean Green was unable to dig its way out of. Fouls (29) and turnovers (22) proved to be too much for Petersen's young squad to overcome. The Mean Green will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for a meeting with the Crimson Tide on Monday night.
