DENTON, Texas (4/8/11) -The North Texas softball team will look for its first conference series win of the season when it faces Florida Atlantic on the road this weekend. The Mean Green faces the Owls on Saturday, April 9 at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader.
The Mean Green (17-20) looks to pick up some more road wins, posting a 2-6 record when not at home. North Texas has won two of the last three series against the Owls, but FAU won two of three last year at Lovelace Stadium. FAU is 22-18 overall and 6-3 in Sun Belt play.
Behind one of Brittany Simmons' best pitching performances, North Texas defeated UTA, 1-0, on the road on Wednesday. NT leads the series against UTA, 8-4, and has won the last five games. The last three games have been decided by two or fewer runs. It was Simmons' first shutout victory of the season and only the first for the Mean Green since March 5, when NT defeated Wichita State, 9-0.
Courtney Bradshaw has led the Mean Green offense the last six games with a .467 batting average. She is second on the team with an overall hitting percentage of .313.
The North Texas and UTA softball teams are joining up to raise money for TWU softball player Abby Burns who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in January. The two teams will play two charity games during the 2011 season to raise money for Abby's medical expenses. For the past three years, the two teams have each hosted strikeout cancer games at their respective schools, benefiting the American Cancer Society. This year, the two programs have decided to raise money for Burns, who was a teammate of current North Texas softball player Hayley Siebman.
North Texas will host its own charity game in Abby's honor on May 4 when the Mean Green faces UTA for a second time. Admission is free in lieu of a cash donation.
