Bowling Green, Ky. (4/3/11) - A six-run sixth inning propelled the North Texas softball team to an 11-7 victory against WKU on Sunday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Mean Green improves to 16-20 and 3-9 in the conference, while the Hilltoppers fall to 20-16 and 3-6 in the Sun Belt. WKU won the conference season series, but the Mean Green was able to pick up a victory in the third game.
North Texas held early leads, but WKU came back to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning. The Mean Green offense responded with six runs in the sixth inning. Mallory Cantler hit her team-leading seventh home run in the inning.
Ashley Kirk (7-10) picked up the win in relief. She pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two runs off two hits.
North Texas jumped out early with four runs in the first two innings. Mariza Martinez knocked in the first run with an RBI single, and Caitlin Grimes added a run with a sacrifice fly. Brooke Foster hit her second career home run in the second inning to give North Texas a 4-1 lead.
WKU pecked away at the lead, adding runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. With two outs in the fifth, Karavin Dew tripled and then scored off a wild pitch to give the Hilltoppers their first lead of the game.
The Mean Green exploded for sixth runs at the top of the sixth. Foster, Monica Hirsch and Maddelyn Fraley hit consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. Foster scored on a wild pitch, and then Cantler cleared the bases with a two-run homer. After Courtney Bradshaw doubled, Renae Bromley knocked her home with a single. Lisa Johnson capped the scoring with an RBI double.
Cantler led the Mean Green with three hits. Martinez, Monica Hirsch and Brooke Foster also posted multi-hit games. Courtney Bradshaw hit .600 in the three games with six hits.
North Texas returns to action when it faces UTA on Wednesday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
