DENTON, Texas - North Texas formally introduced Karen Aston as the sixth women's basketball coach in school history at a press conference today. Aston returns to Denton after spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the Mean Green from 1996-98. She has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Charlotte. "I just want to thank Rick Villarreal and Dr. Rawlins for this tremendous opportunity that they have given me," said Aston. "My passion is about basketball and I'm very committed to being great in everything that we do. There is an enormous amount of potential here at North Texas to be great." While at North Texas, Aston was instrumental in the recruitment of two of the greatest players in program history, Jalie Mitchell and Rosalyn Reades. At Charlotte, Aston led the program to record-breaking heights as she won 86 games in four seasons, including a school-record 27 wins this past year. Aston led the 49ers to four-straight post season appearances and the 2009 Atlantic-10 Tournament title for the school's second NCAA Tournament trip in school history. Aston replaces Shanice Stephens who compiled a record of 25-67 in three seasons with North Texas. |
