Sun Belt Tourney, Apps And Apogee Visitors

If you’re planning to go to the Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament March 3-6 in Hot Springs but don’t yet have all your arrangements made, you’d best hurry. Accommodations are going fast. The Embassy Suites and The Austin, both in close proximity to the Summit Arena, are now full. There are a few rooms available at Candlewood Suites.

The really good news is that North Texas has already sold more tickets to the Sun Belt Tournament than it did a year ago, and there are still three weeks to the start of the tourney on March 3.

Tickets are still available from the UNT Ticket Office. Information on tickets, lodging and a schedule of events is here.

As we did on football signing day, we’ll have a page devoted to the tournament updated throughout the four-day event and with news, schedules, TV and radio listings and links, and links to all the articles and videos our staff will file from Hot Springs.

The Mean Green Athletic Department is preparing to launch an app for Droid and iPhone users featuring North Texas sports news, schedules, scores, and videos. The app is in final testing.

For those wondering, the events of this week involving the merger of Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference have not gone unnoticed at North Texas.

The athletic director of Tulane was in the DFW area last week touring four stadiums: TCU, American Airlines Center, the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, and Apogee Stadium. Also in the group was a representative from Conference USA.

The identity of the new commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference is expected to be announced at the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament. Commissioner Wright Waters, who has held the post since 1998, is retiring in July.

Saturday’s doubleheader at the Super Pit is senior night for the men’s and women’s basketball games. It’s also Mean Green Club Appreciation Night. Club members can get two complimentary tickets to bring guests to the North Texas women’s and men’s games against Louisiana-Lafayette. Registration for the 22nd Annual Don January Golf Classic is continuing. The event takes place on April 2 at Trophy Club Country Club. Shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. Registrants can begin signing in at 10 a.m., followed by lunch at 11. Outback Steakhouse is providing dinner at the evening’s awards presentation and silent auction.

Most importantly, for an additional $50 you can purchase five raffle tickets and five mulligans…for those who might need a mulligan or two or five. There's also a chance to win a car with a hole-in-one.
