GAME NOTES
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The North Texas basketball road swing
through south Florida continues on Saturday night against one of the country’s
top scorers in Florida Atlantic’s Greg Gantt. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
Central, and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
Gantt leads the Sun Belt with an average of 22.5 per points
game, and is shooting 41.2 percent from deep. Gantt has connected on 54
three-pointers on the year, which isn’t far behind NT’s team total of 62. Last
year, NT kept Gantt in check in their lone meeting, holding him to six points
on 2-of-11 shooting.
The Mean Green will counter Gantt with Tony Mitchell, who
put in an epic performance in the last meeting with Florida Atlantic. Although it
wasn’t enough to hold off the owls in the 86-81 double-overtime loss, Mitchell
piled up 22 points, 21 rebounds, six blocks and five assists, which was just
the ninth 20/20 game in the NCAA last year. It was the eighth best rebounding
performance in the country of 2012, and the ninth best in NT history.
It took Mitchell just 42 games to take down the program’s
career shot block record. The sophomore posted four blocks at FIU on Thursday,
and now has 121 for his career. He passed Jeffrey Simpson (119 from 2004-06)
for the career mark, and now has his sights set on breaking his own
single-season record of 70 set last season. Mitchell and Florida Atlantic’s
Kelvin Penn are tied atop the Sun Belt with 2.7 blocks per game.
NT leads the overall series with Florida Atlantic, 5-3,
despite last year’s 86-81 double-overtime loss to the Owls in Boca Raton. The
series began in 2006-07 when FAU joined the SBC as a full time member.
