A member of the Sun Belt conference, North Texas has captured 11 conference championships in the last five years. During the 2005-06 school year, the Mean Green soccer team won its second straight conference championship, regular season title and NCAA Tournament berth. Individually, 65 Mean Green student-athletes were named Sun Belt All-Conference during the 2005-06 school year.
The 2005 soccer team won its second consecutive conference championship as well as regular season title. The Mean Green advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, falling to SMU in the first round. North Texas finished the 2005 season with the best record in school history at 16-4-2.
Heather Hutyra was named Sun Belt Conference Soccer Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2005, the youngest player in the Sun Belt to ever earn the honor. Teammate Kelli Lunsford was named conference Freshman of the Year, and John Hedlund received conference Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season.
The North Texas track and field team combined for nine conference championships in the indoor and outdoor meets during the 2006 indoor and outdoor seasons. The track team also sent 19 athletes to the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
As a team, the women’s track and field finished second at the indoor conference championship and third at the outdoor meet.
Brandi Stanfield advanced to both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track Championships, earning All-America status after placing 11th in the triple jump at the 2006 indoor meet. She also won the indoor conference title in the triple jump, setting a conference and school record, and was named the conference women’s field Performer of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year honors at the indoor meet.
The men’s and women’s golf teams both placed second at the 2006 Sun Belt Championships. The women lost by three strokes, while the men lost in a three-way playoff. Austin Welch was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Team after placing third at the conference tournament.
The women’s basketball team won the Western Division of the Sun Belt Conference in 2005-06. The Mean Green recorded its fourth best record in school history and won its fourth division title in the last eight years.
Aaron Weathers was named the Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2005 after recording the most tackles ever by a North Texas defensive back.
