No. 87 - Casey Fitzgerald Fries The Competition
If you frequented the Whataburger off Fort Worth Drive between '04 and '08 there's a chance you got your bacon cheddar burger from an All-American. Just a walk-on to the football team when he came to Denton, Casey Fitzgerald picked up shifts at the burger joint to help pay for his dream of being a wide receiver for the Mean Green - even after he earned a scholarship in '07.
After a redshirt season in his first year, Fitzgerald found cracking the lineup in NT's run-first offense tough, catching just nine passes for 92 yards in the '05 and '06 campaigns combined.
Then Todd Dodge stepped onto the scene and reworked the Mean Green offense. Looking for a veteran receiver to take the lead of his five-wide system, Fitzgerald's talent and work ethic fit Dodge's mold perfectly. He caught seven passes for 126 yards and a touchdown in the season opener at Oklahoma, and followed it with 18 catches for 327 yards and two scores at SMU - the fifth-best performance in NCAA history.
Fitzgerald left the record books in his wake en route to a school record 1,322 receiving yards that year, and even posted a school-record 99-yard touchdown catch. As a senior, he broke the school record for receptions in a season with 113. Sports Illustrated named Fitzgerald an Honorable Mention All-American in 2007, and he earned two First-Team All-Sun Belt bids.
The Red Oak, Texas native still ranks third in school history in career receiving yards with 2,533, but his burger flipping days are in the rear view mirror. Fitzgerald remains in the game as a coach at Wylie East High School.
