DENTON,
Texas (12/10/09) - It has become a
holiday tradition in Denton, Texas to see Mean Green student-athletes ringing
bells at area businesses for the Denton Salvation Army. More than 50
student-athletes took an active role this past weekend in the Salvation Army's
Red Kettles Drive.
"Our student-athletes have been honored by the
Salvation Army in past years as "volunteers of the year" for their annual
support of this endeavor," said Hank Dickenson, Deputy Athletic Director and a
member of the Salvation Army of Denton County's Board of Directors. "What many
people do not realize is the fact that without volunteers, the Army has to pay
people to ring the Kettles. Our student-athletes are a BIG part of the overall
fundraising success for this initiative. We show up in big numbers each year
thanks to our kids and their willingness to help others. On behalf of the
entire athletic department and the Salvation Army, we thank them all! "
Every
Christmas holiday, Mean Green student-athletes find time to volunteer with the
Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive. The athletes work in shifts at the Golden
Triangle Mall and nearby stores to help raise money. Student-athletes from
the men's and women's golf, men's and women's track, women's tennis, softball
and volleyball teams came out in the cold to ring the bell this year.
