Prospective Student-Athlete Information - Women's Tennis
Women's Tennis Questionnaire
We are excited about your interest in the University of
North Texas and Mean Green women's tennis.
North
Texas tennis reached new heights in the 2009-10 season, capturing the Sun Belt
Conference Championships and appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first
time. After a strong regular season
which featured wins over No. 73 Texas Tech and Denver, Mean Green Tennis rolled
through the conference tournament, taking down No. 49 Florida International in
the final. When it was all said and done, the team matched its win total from ’08-09
at 17.
Head coach Sujay Lama was named the Sun Belt Women’s Coach
of the Year while Catalina Cruz, the lone senior on the squad, earned the conference’s
most outstanding player award for her efforts during the conference tournament.
Cruz was also selected as player of the week once during her final campaign. Sophomore
Paula Dinuta registered the best record on the team, winning 13 of her final 15
matches and finishing the year 17-6.
Quick Hits On North Texas
A member of the Sun
Belt
Conference, North Texas has captured 14 conference championships since
2001.
Individually, 69 Mean Green student-athletes were named All-Sun Belt
Conference
during the 2009-10 school year. This past season, the Mean Green won two
conference championships and finished in the top three at conference
championships in eight sports. Many of the teams posted their best
seasons in
program history.
In 2009-10, four
Mean Green
sports saw postseason play. The men's basketball team won the Sun Belt
Conference tournament title and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
The
women's tennis also won a conference championship, its first Sun Belt
title in
school history. Two Mean Green golfers, freshmen Rodolfo Cazaubon and
Carlos Ortiz, were selected to
play in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional in
Bremerton, Wash., in May, making North Texas the only team in the nation
with
two true freshmen individual players participating in an NCAA Regional. Fifteen track& field
athletes qualified for the NCAA Championship Preliminary Rounds in
12 different
events in May, and four moved on in two events to the NCAA Outdoor Track
& Field Championships in Eugene,
Ore., in June.
