DENTON (5/16/06) - Junior third baseman Susan Waters was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Waters, a kinesiology major, is the first student-athlete to be named to the academic all-district team in the three-year history of the North Texas softball program. She is a two-time member of the North Texas Dean’s List and the Sun Belt Commissioner’s List.
The Davenport, Okla., native had a stellar junior campaign. She set the single-season home run record at North Texas with 18 long balls and is the career record holder with 32. The junior led the team with 18 home runs, 14 doubles, four triples, 53 RBI and 21 walks. She set 10 single-season marks in 2006 and currently holds 11 career records at North Texas.
Waters was among the nation’s leaders in home runs and slugging percentage. She was ranked 15th in the NCAA for home runs per game (.32) and 27th in slugging percentage. Her other accolades include being named first-team All-Sun Belt as well as receiving pre-season all-conference recognition. She was also named to the Tulsa Festival All-Tournament Team and received Sun Belt Player of the Week honors during the season.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. District VI represents student-athletes in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Waters will now be added to the Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced on May 31.
