GAME NOTES
DENTON, Texas – The Sun Belt Conference’s most successful
programs over the last seven seasons will square off on Thursday when Western Kentucky
visits the Super Pit for a locally televised game. Tipoff is slated for 7:30
p.m. and can be seen in the DFW Metroplex on TXA-21.
North Texas and Western Kentucky have dominated the Sun Belt
in recent years, especially in March. At least one of the two programs has
advanced to the SBC Tournament finals in each of the last seven seasons, with
each team playing in four championship games in that span. NT, playing in its
third straight finals, fell to WKU, 74-70, in the 2012 championship game.
Jordan Williams and Tony Mitchell have both had past success
against WKU. Williams is averaging 17.0 points per game on 59.1 percent
shooting, including a career mark of 5-of-6 from 3-point. Mitchell is averaging
15.3 points and 9.3 boards in three matchups against WKU.
A pair of former Argyle teammates will suit up against each
other for the first time as collegiate rivals in NT freshman Clarke Overlander
and WKU redshirt junior Caden Dickerson. Both led the Eagles to fantastic
campaigns as a senior, with Overlander leading Argyle to the school’s first
state title in 2012. Dickerson missed the December matchup due to injury.
NT announced this week that seniors Jacob Holmen and Justin
Patton were ending their careers due to injury concerns, which means that NT
will take the court with just eight scholarship players for the rest of the
regular season. NT lost sharp shooter Brandan Walton in the season opener, and
starting point guard Chris Jones broke his foot in December. NT’s injuries have
already accounted for 52 individual games missed in 2012-13.
