INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The North Texas volleyball team rolled to a sweep of Georgia State and the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational title on Saturday. The victory pads the resume for the best start in school history and gives the Mean Green back-to-back tournament championships for the first time in school history (25-14, 25-18, 25-17).
At 7-1 on the young season, North Texas is off to its best-ever eight-match start. In fact, two of the top three eight-match starts have come in the Ken Murczek era, as the 2010 squad ranks third with a 6-2 mark. Carnae Dillard was named the tournament MVP, while Courtney Windham and Shelby Tamura earned all-tournament team nods.
The Mean Green simply had too much firepower for the Panthers (1-5), who hit .074 on the afternoon. North Texas countered with .293 hitting and nine team blocks. The usual suspects, Dillard and Windham, landed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
NT held the Panthers to -.032 hitting in the opening frame, which allowed the Mean Green to run away with the set. North Texas, paced by Windham’s three blocks, led by as much as 11, and hit .280 in the set.
The second and third sets were just as good for the Mean Green, which landed 17 kills on .333 hitting in the second, and 13 kills on .257 hitting in the third.
While the IUPUI tournament is over for North Texas the road trip continues. The Mean Green travels to Lubbock, Texas for a Monday afternoon match at Texas Tech. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at United Spirit Arena.
