SOC: Mean Green Start Season 2-0

DENTON, Texas (8/23/12) - North Texas soccer will look to stay unbeaten this weekend, playing the Sam Houston State Bearkats on the road on Fri., August 24, before playing the first home game of the season on Sun., August 26, against the Houston Cougars.

The Mean Green picked up a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to begin the season thanks to freshman Karla Pineda's goal in the 103rd minute. Junior Kelsey Hodges, who was recently named Sun Belt Defender of the Week for her performance during the first two games, scored North Texas' first goal of the season in the 21st minute to tie the game against Oral Roberts before scoring the only goal of the 1-0 win over Missouri State.

"We don't want to lose or tie a game," said Hodges. "Fighting the battle of being in overtime and getting that goal from a freshman makes it a bigger deal and being 2-0 starting out. It shows people around the country that we're here and we're going to be here to work hard."

The Bearkats (1-1-0) enter Friday's game following a 1-0 loss to the Texas State Bobcats. Texas State's Jourdan Brown tallied the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to send Sam Houston State to its first loss of the season. Both of the Bearkats' games this season have been decided by a 1-0 score.

After falling 2-0 to Stephen F. Austin in the season opener, Houston bounced back with a 3-2 win over Houston Baptist. Jasmine Martinez, Kayla Walker and Lauren Hodgdon each have a goal thus far.

The Mean Green is riding an eight-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season, and lead the all-time series with Sam Houston State with four wins in five contests. North Texas has also lost just once to Houston in nine career matchups, with the only loss coming in 2002 by a 4-1 score.
