DENTON, Texas - North Texas golfer Carlos Ortiz will tee it up on Monday afternoon as he plays in the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club.  Ortiz will tee off in the afternoon after qualifying for the championship for the first time in his career.

Ortiz qualified for the U.S. Amateur after winning the only qualifying spot out of the Odessa, Texas sectional. Ortiz shot a two-round score of 141 at Odessa Country Club to qualify.

Ortiz, heading into his senior season at North Texas, is a three-time all-conference player and was the 2011 Sun Belt Conference champion. For his career Ortiz has 12 top-10 finishes with the Mean Green and three individual titles. He is the first active North Texas golfer to play in the U.S. Amateur Championship since Raul Lemus in 2005.

The Denver-based Cherry Hills Country Club will be set up at 7,432 yards and play as a Par-71 for the championship.  The field will play two rounds of stroke play and the top-64 golfers will advance to match play.
