DENTON, Texas - North Texas tennis associate head coach Jeff Maren has accepted the head coaching position at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, head tennis coach Sujay Lama announced Wednesday.
Maren, who has been with the Mean Green for six years, was a major part of turning the North Texas tennis program around from a 2-19 team the first year, to winning the Sun Belt Conference and appearing in the NCAA Tournament two of the last three seasons.
"We are going to miss Coach Maren, but at the same time we are also very happy for him," said Lama. "He is going to be a very successful head coach and we are excited to see him build a strong program at Liberty. Our best wishes to Coach Maren and his family as they begin their new journey."
He will be the first head coach to focus solely on the women's team, as the both the men's and women's programs have previously used the same coach for both squads.
""It has been an honor and a privilege to work at UNT for the past six years with Coach Lama and the entire athletic staff," Maren said. "I have learned so much, and now feel prepared to lead a team of my own. I'd like to thank Coach Lama for being such a great friend and mentor to me. I'd also like to thank Rick and his staff for their support of the tennis program. We couldn't have achieved so many "firsts" without each of you. Lastly, I'd like to thank all of our players, past and present. What a joy it has been to coach each of you. You will not be forgotten."
Maren helped the Mean Green post a 75-41 record in the last five seasons and was an integral part in the program-high ranking at No. 40 during the early part of the 2012 spring season.
He will take the reins at Liberty on July 5th.
