Boca Raton, Fla. (5/9/12) - The WKU softball team snapped
the Mean Green's six-game winning streak as North Texas dropped its opening
game of the Sun Belt Conference Championship, 3-1, on Wednesday night at the
FAU Softball Stadium.
The Mean Green falls to 26-25-1 overall and 0-1 in the
conference tournament. NT is now 4-4 in opening-round games of the conference
tournament. North Texas will play No. 8 Florida
Atlantic in an elimination game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
WKU (32-23-1) won its first game against the Mean Green
this season. North Texas won the conference series, picking up two wins and a
tie.
North Texas struck first with a run in the first inning,
but WKU added runs in the second and fifth innings to take the lead. Megan Rupp
recorded all of the Mean Green's three hits in the game.
Emily Rosseau earned the win for the Hilltoppers. She
pitched seven innings and allowed one run off three hits in the game. Ashley
Kirk (11-12) took the loss for the Mean Green. She pitched 3.1 innings and gave
up three runs off six hits.
Rupp took the first pitch over the leftfielder's head for
a double to start things off for the Mean Green in the first inning. The senior
advanced to third on a groundout by Lesley Hirsch and scored off a sacrifice
fly by Brooke Foster.
WKU responded with two runs off two hits in the second
inning. Katrina Metoyer knocked in two runs with a triple to right centerfield.
The Hilltoppers added to the lead with an RBI single by Keslie Mattox in the
fifth to put WKU ahead by two, 3-1.
