DENTON,
Texas (5/6/12) - The North Texas softball team earned a No. 4 seed in the 2012
Sun Belt Conference Championship and will face the No.5 seed, Western Kentucky,
in its first-round game on Wednesday, May 9 at 3 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
The No. 4 ranking is the second-highest seed
the Mean Green has received since the Sun Belt Conference started fielding an
eight-team championship in 2007. The 2010 Mean Green team earned a No. 3 seed.
The Mean
Green finished its regular season with an overall record of 26-24-1 and a
conference mark of 13-10-1. The 26 wins are tied for the third-most victories
in school history and the 13 conference wins is a team best. WKU is 31-23-1
overall and 11-12-1 in the conference. NT won the conference series against the
Hilltoppers, picking up two wins and a tie.
North Texas
is playing in its eighth conference tournament. The top eight teams advance to
the double-elimination conference tournament. Louisiana-Lafayette earned its
fifth straight No. 1 seed and looks to defend its conference title. The Ragin'
Cajuns took the top seed after winning the regular season title with a 21-3
conference mark.
NT is 4-3 in
opening round conference tournament games and 10-14 overall in the tournament. North
Texas is 17-15-1 in the all-time series against WKU and 3-1 in the conference
tournament. The winner of the game between the Mean Green and the Hilltoppers
will play either ULL or FAU on Thursday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m.
The
tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 9 at the host school Florida Atlantic
and conclude with the championship game on Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m., central
time.
