No. 65 - James St. Clair's Winning Percentage

James W. "Jimmie" St. Clair coached football at North Texas from 1915 to 1919, and basketball from 1916 to 1924, save for the 1920-21 season. St. Clair is not only North Texas' most successful football coach in terms of winning percentage at 65.6 (20-10-2), but is also North Texas' most successful men's basketball coach with a 73.4 winning percentage (58-21), making him a forgotten North Texas coaching legend. St. Clair pulled double-duty, as was common during that era, and coached both football and men's basketball from 1916 to 1919.

St. Clair's North Texas squad did not give up a point until their 5th game under St. Clair, the finale of the 1915 season. North Texas dropped a 6-0 decision to Dallas University, bringing its record to 4-1. St. Clair led his team to a 4-3-1 record in 1916, before posting another one-loss campaign in 1917.

The 1917 team lost the opener to Burelson College, then won six straight games to close out the season. In a short 1918 season, North Texas went 1-2-1, before going 5-3 in St. Clair's final season of 1919, with a 87-6 victory over Dallas University in the process.

On the hardwood, St. Clair's teams went 58-21, and had winning records against TCU (7-4), Texas (2-1), Tulsa (3-1) and Baylor (3-0). St. Clair posted two straight one-loss seasons, losing only by four points to Tulsa in 1921-22 (11-1) and by a single bucket to West Texas State in 1922-23 (13-1).

After his stay at North Texas, St. Clair was basketball head coach at SMU from 1924-1936, and led the Mustangs to two conference titles.

His work as a basketball coach earned him a national reputation, and he was named to the National Basketball Rules Committee in 1934.
