No. 64 - Spider's Special Season

Carl "Spider" Lockhart enjoyed a great senior season at North Texas as he led the Mean Green in 1964 in receiving, punt returns, punting, interceptions, and was second in rushing and kickoff returns.  Lockhart's season led to him being drafted by the New York Giants in the 13th round.

Lockhart became a star for the Giants from 11 seasons (1965-75). His tied for the team record for most interceptions in a game with three.

Lockhart was an all-conference player in '64, had 169 yards rushing, 341 yards receiving, and 807 all-purpose yards that season.  The versatile Lockhart didn't' stop there. He was also the punter for North Texas in '63 and '64, leading the team with averages of 39.5 and 39.6 yards a punt.

Also Considered: He was recruited to North Texas as a tight end and arrived as a little known player from the small town of Argyle. A year later he was moved to offensive line in a hardly notable switch, but the little man from Argyle would go onto be one of the best offensive lineman for North Texas in the forthcoming years.

Victor Gill, the way too small to be an offensive lineman, was a three-year starter for the Mean Green at tackle on the offensive line. He went from a scrawny 235 pounds up to around 260 pounds for his senior season.

Gill played the tackle spot, often times facing defensive ends that had him by 20 or 30 pounds, as good as it has been played at for North Texas in decades. He was a first-team all-conference pick in 2010 and for three seasons defied all odds to play as an undersized offensive lineman.

Gill, the former high school wide receiver turned offensive lineman (has that ever happened?) won't go down as the best offensive lineman in school history, but he proved that size doesn't always matter.
