No. 67 - Phillip Armour Anchors The '90's For NT

Phillip Armour was all that embodied what it was to be Mean Green in the mid to late '90's. At 6-3, 318-pounds, Armour was a 3-time All-Big West selection at center that helped Ja'Quay Wilburn become a household name in Denton.

Wilburn, of course, was the first NT running back to ever lead his team in rushing in four straight seasons. Armour wore No. 67 and anchored the line that got Wilburn into the endzone.

As a matter of fact he was the first North Texas offensive lineman to get an NFL look since Willie Parker in 1971 when the Indianapolis Colts gave him a free agent shot in 2000. He ended up seeing action in three games for the Colts as a backup that season after many folks considered him a draft-day snub.

The Denton High School product even overcame a spinal injury that caused him to sit his freshman campaign at NT. Refusing to be held back by the injury, Armour moved from defensive end to center and put on 80 pounds. The rest is history for the man former NT head coach Darrell Dickey called one of the two best offensive lineman he's ever coached.

North Texas players still get a glimpse of what Armour meant to the program each year at the annual football banquet when the award named in his honor is handed to the Mean Green's best offensive lineman from that season.
