No. 72 - Yaege Turns In Stellar Season

There wasn't much about the 1972 season worth remembering for North Texas. The Rod Rust era came to an end with a thud, going 1-10 that year. However the season would be remember for the play of David Yaege.

Yaege became just the third player in school history that year to lead the Mean Green in punting and receiving. Yaege, known as a deceptively quick receiver from Houston, is the last player for North Texas to pull off the rare feat of kicking and playing an impact position.

In '72, Yaege had 42 receptions for 738 yards, which led the Missouri Valley Conference that season as well as North Texas.  The bad news was Yaege was also busy as a punter that year.

In fact he kicked a school record 14 punts against Drake in 1972, a record which still stands today. Yaege also still holds the school record for most punting yards in a game, done the year before in '71.

He was the only all-conference selection that year, earning a spot on the Missouri Valley's first-team that year as a punter. '72 wasn't a banner year for most, but for David Yaege he left a versatile and indelible mark on the football team unlikely to be matched again.
