No. 73 - Hayden Fry and the new Mean Green

Expectations for North Texas are high with a new coach on campus, a coach who plans "for North Texas to have one of the nation's best football programs." The coach has made it a priority to fill the stadium, as the athletic department's slogan tells fans about "the new Mean Green." Media members, including Randy Galloway, have declared that North Texas has rejuvenated the program.

While the preceding paragraph could apply to North Texas football in 2011, it was the scenario for North Texas in 1973, with former SMU boss Hayden Fry at the helm. Fry would go on to become one of North Texas' best coaches, with five .500-or-better seasons in six years, a conference title, and two 9+ win seasons.

In his first year, Fry would lead the Mean Green, off of a 1-10 season in 1972, to a 5-5-1 record and a Missouri Valley Conference title. North Texas received the good fortune of a missed extra point against Louisville to defeat the Cardinals 7-6, and David Kervin caught three touchdowns, a North Texas record at the time, to clinch the conference title against Wichita State, by a score of 31-21.

After six years at North Texas, Fry moved on to Iowa, where he gave a young assistant named Dan McCarney his first coaching job. McCarney, of course, now finds himself in a situation that closely resembles that of his mentor's first year in Denton. If the parallels between Fry and McCarney at North Texas includes on-field performance in the first year, keep December 17th free on your calendar.
