No. 91 - Brelan Chancellor Saves The MGRN
As a frequent guest of the Mean Green Coaches Radio Show over the years, I have nothing but compliments to give George Dunham and Hank Dickenson for their excellence in broadcasting. But you could always tell when the hosts were low on trivia question ideas because one particular query always seemed to pop up year after year. It was George and Hank's default fallback question.
"Who was the last North Texas player to return a kickoff for a touchdown?"
Almost everyone at the show would rush to the microphone to claim their prize since they knew the answer. Everyone did. It hadn't changed since 1998; Broderick McGrew, who ran one back 100 yards on Utah State back in the Bill Clinton administration.
I'm happy to report to all coaches show attendees that this trivia question has been put to rest thanks to Brelan Chancellor. The freshman became the breakout star of the Mean Green special teams unit in 2010 when he broke the 143-game drought with a 91-yard dazzler against ULM on Nov. 20.
Not satisfied with that outing, Chancellor followed it up with a 93-yard touchdown return against Kansas State in the Fouts Field finale. He ended the year atop the Sun Belt and 14th in the NCAA with an average of 27.9 yards per return - not bad for a rookie.
Here's betting that Chancellor will be the answer to another future radio show trivia question - "Who was the first player to return a kickoff for a touchdown in the New Mean Green Stadium?"
